Hero's Song is a 2D pixel art action RPG for the PC. It seems pretty interesting and has a single and multiplayer aspect with a dynamically generated world. I also liked the art style. ... heros-song

Interesting - I checked it out and the project has already been cancelled after one week on Kickstarter. This, by the way, is the answer to why we didn't ask for a "more realistic" $800K for Hero-U. We barely scraped through at $400K with some last-minute heroics by our backers.

The Hero's Song project claims to have backers who will support development. That may be the only way to go - Kickstarter can be useful to raise part of the funding and demonstrate player interest, but very few games manage to raise the full development budget there.

Hero's Song got an impressive 3000 backers in that first week - attaching Patrick Rothfuss to the project undoubtedly helped. However, at $136,000 raised after one week, they could expect to get $400K at max.

Failure isn't always a bad thing. There are plenty of projects that have run two, even three crowd funding campaigns before succeeding. Sometimes it takes the cold reality of failure to manage expectations. If they have a shot at raising $400k, as Corey suggests, they can evaluate if it's worthwhile to cut the game back to fit a more modest budget.
